How to size an upright fridge

Start with the floor, not the litres. An upright gives you the most refrigerated storage per square metre you give up, which is why it is the default once a kitchen has wall space to work with. This range runs 144 L to 2,013 L in cabinet widths from 390 mm to 2,584 mm, and the middle of it is a 791 L cabinet at 1,200 mm wide. Measure the run and the door swing first — width rules models out long before capacity does.

Door count is how most buyers narrow it down

One door (46 models) suits a single bay, a prep station or a tight corner. Two doors (45) is the commonest commercial size. Three (17) and four (11) are volume kitchens, bakeries and supermarket back rooms, and we hold six-door cabinets above that. Door count also decides how much cold you lose across a service: four narrow doors opened one at a time hold temperature far better than two wide ones standing open.

Temperature and what to check on the spec sheet

Most of this range holds 2 °C to 8 °C, and a good number reach lower. What matters is the bottom of the band, not the top: chilled potentially hazardous food is held at 5 °C or below in Australian kitchens, so a cabinet whose realistic working range starts at 4 °C has very little headroom on a hot day. Check the climate class too — a unit rated for a cool plant room will struggle against a hot kitchen wall in February, and that is the commonest reason a fridge "stops working" in summer.

Solid door or glass door
