Who buys a commercial chest freezer

Restaurants and cafés holding bulk frozen stock. Butchers and delis. School and institutional kitchens. Convenience stores, service stations and supermarkets running frozen product out front. Gelato and ice-cream shops. It is the same category of cabinet across all of them — what changes is the lid.

Glass lid or solid lid — the lid decides the job

Glass sliding lids (33 of the 40 here) let customers see and reach frozen stock themselves, so the cabinet does some of the selling. Those are on our glass lid chest freezers page.

Stainless steel lifting lids (7 models) are for back-of-house bulk storage, and they cost markedly less per litre — a median of $2.11 per litre against $3.93 for glass, with no overlap between the two ranges. If nobody is shopping from the cabinet, the solid lid is the cheaper way to buy freezer space. See storage chest freezers.

Island freezers are the wide double-sided cabinets built to sit in the middle of a shop floor rather than against a wall, and small supermarkets often run several side by side as one long run. They are listed separately under island freezers.

Size by footprint first, then litres

The range runs 176 L to 1,105 L in cabinet widths from 719 mm to 2,505 mm. A chest freezer is bought by the floor space it will occupy, so measure the wall run or aisle before you shortlist on capacity. The middle of this range is a 528 L cabinet at 1,750 mm wide.

Adjustable temperature on ten own-brand cabinets

Ten of the cabinets we build under our own name are adjustable between −22 °C and 0 °C rather than fixed at a single setting, so you can set the cabinet to suit what you are holding. The other own-brand cabinets hold −20 °C to −18 °C. They stay freezers throughout — if you need chilled temperatures above 0 °C, that is a different cabinet.

If you need blast freezing — dropping the core temperature of hot product fast — that is a different machine again; see our blast chillers and shock freezers.
