Choosing a commercial chest freezer

Lid type first. A glass lid sells — customers see what's inside and open it less, so the cabinet holds temperature better in a busy shop. A solid top is cheaper to run and better where nobody is browsing, such as back-of-house or bulk storage; those are on our storage chest freezers page.

Then capacity. Our glass-lid range runs 176 L to 1,012 L. As a rough guide, 176–400 L suits a single drinks or ice-cream bay in a café or service station; 400–700 L covers a small supermarket aisle end; 700 L and up is for volume — bulk meat, wholesale, or a full frozen section. Width matters as much as litres in a tight shop: ours span 719 mm to 2,505 mm, so measure the gap before you shortlist on capacity alone.

Temperature. These cabinets hold around −18 °C and below, which is the storage band for frozen food in Australia. If you need blast freezing — dropping the core temperature of hot product fast — that is a different machine; see our blast chillers and shock freezers.

Adjustable temperature — on our own units. The CF sliding-door cabinets we build under our own name (273 L to 615 L) are adjustable from −22 °C to 0 °C rather than fixed at a single setting, so you can set the cabinet to suit what you are holding instead of working around a fixed thermostat. That range is on our own-brand units, not the resale lines. It stays a freezer throughout — if you need chilled temperatures above 0 °C, that is a different cabinet.
