A display freezer is a sales fixture that happens to be cold

The job is visibility: the customer decides in front of the glass, so lighting, shelf height and how full the cabinet looks matter as much as the compressor. That is why these are specified differently from a storage upright — same footprint, different purpose. Ours run 78 L to 1,900 L, one to five doors, 595 mm to 2,104 mm wide.

Where they earn their keep

Supermarket and convenience frozen aisles, bottle shops holding ice and frozen mixers, gelato and ice-cream counters, service stations, and any takeaway selling frozen product over the counter. A single-door cabinet works as an end-of-aisle or impulse position; two-, three- and four-door runs become the frozen section itself.

What glass costs you, and what to look for

Glass is a worse insulator than steel, so a display freezer works harder than a storage cabinet of the same size — that is the trade for being able to see in. What limits the damage is the door: double- or triple-glazing, a heated frame so the seal does not ice up, and a seal that is actually replaceable when it perishes. Ask about the glazing and the frame heater rather than only about litres, because that is where the running cost is decided.

Lighting and merchandising

LED strips down the door pillars rather than a single top lamp keep the lower shelves shoppable, which is where slow-moving stock goes to die in a badly lit cabinet. Check whether shelves are adjustable and how the cabinet looks half-empty — a display freezer spends most of its life not full.
