How to size an upright freezer

Work from the footprint first. An upright buys you the most frozen storage per square metre of floor, which is why it is the default when a kitchen has wall space and not much of it. Our range runs 78 L to 2,013 L in cabinet widths from 595 mm to 2,104 mm; the middle of it is a 791 L cabinet at 1,220 mm wide. Measure the run — and the door swing — before you shortlist on litres, because width is what actually rules models out.

Door count is how most buyers narrow it down

One door (34 models) suits a single bay or a tight back-of-house corner. Two doors (36) is the commonest commercial size. Three (15) and four (8) are volume kitchens and supermarket back rooms, and we hold five- and six-door cabinets above that. Door count also decides how much cold you lose per service: four small doors opened one at a time hold temperature better than two large ones opened constantly.

Temperature and what to check on the spec sheet

Most of this range holds −22 °C to −18 °C, which is the Australian storage band for frozen food. Some models are rated to a narrower band — check the sheet rather than assuming, particularly if you are holding ice cream, which wants the colder end. Also check the climate class: a cabinet rated for a cool plant room will struggle against a hot kitchen wall in February, and that is the commonest cause of a freezer that "stops working" in summer.

Solid door or glass door

Solid doors (53 of the 99 here) are for storage: they hold temperature better, cost less per litre and use less power, and nobody is browsing a back-of-house cabinet — see our upright storage freezers for that half on its own.
