Planning a commercial cool room: a buyer’s checklist

A cool room is a bigger commitment than a standalone fridge — it’s built into your site. Getting the brief right up front saves money and headaches later. Work through this checklist before you order.

1. How much do you need to store?

Size to your product load, not just the floor space you have. Think about delivery volumes, busy-period stock and room to move pallets or trolleys. It’s cheaper to size correctly now than to add a second room later.

2. Cool room or freezer room?

Cool rooms typically run around 0–5°C for chilled stock; freezer rooms run well below zero (commonly around −18 to −22°C). Many sites need both — sometimes as a combination room with a freezer section.

3. Power and site access

  • Confirm available power and where the condensing unit will sit (indoor, outdoor or remote).
  • Check access for the build — doorways, corridors and floor loading.
  • Plan drainage and floor finish, especially for freezer rooms.

4. Panels, doors and fit-out

Insulated panel thickness, door type (hinged or sliding), strip curtains, ramps, shelving and lighting all affect how the room works day to day. A good design gets these right for your workflow.

5. Installation and ongoing service

A cool room is only as good as its install and upkeep. Using one supplier for design, build and preventative maintenance keeps it running and keeps accountability in one place.
